Dr. Mario Schiuma graduated in 1977 with a degree in geology from the National University of La Plata (UNLP), the same year graduated as Specialist in oil and gas mining at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). In 1994 he obtained the title of PHD in Geology at the UNLP for his thesis "Intrusives of the Rio Grande Valley, Province of Mendoza, its importance as hydrocarbon producers.". For that thesis he received the 50th anniversary prize of the Argentine Geological Association as the best thesis of 1994.

He began his professional career as a geologist in YPF Malargue as development geologist, where he specialized in naturally fractured reservoirs and petrophysics.  Between 1990 and 2007 he served as senior geologist at Baker Atlas, and as advisor geologist in the companies Chauvco, Pioneer and Apache.  In 2007 he came back to YPF, from where he retired in 2018 as advisor geologist for the exploration division. He is currently an independent consultant. 

He has presented numerous papers at international and national conferences, and is the editor of the book "Reservoir Rocks of productive basins of Argentina", first (2002) an second edition (2018)

He was the President of the argentine Oil and Gas Institute (IAPG) Exploration Commission in the period 2008-2011 and President of the VIII congress of Hydrocarbon Exploration and Development, organized by the IAPG. He is a professor of "Oil and gas Geology" at the Institute of Oil and  Gas, University of Buenos Aires, and professor of the subject Well logs in the postgraduate career "Specialization in Geosciences of Exploration and Development of Hydrocarbons" of the University of La Plata. His main areas of expertise are petrophysics and evaluation of both exploratory and development projects.
